Thống đốc Ohio Mike DeWine, thuộc đảng Cộng Ḥa đă phản bác những tuyên bố sai sự thật của ông Donald Trump rằng người di dân Haiti ở Springfield đang ăn thịt thú cưng. Theo CBS News, thống đốc DeWine khẳng định rằng đây chỉ là những câu chuyện bịa đặt trên internet, và không giới chức thành phố nào nhận được báo cáo về những hành vi như vậy. Thống đốc dẫn lời ông Rob Rue, Thị trưởng Springfield, rằng “không hề có bằng chứng” cho những câu chuyện được ông Trump phóng đại. Tại cuộc tranh luận với Phó Tổng thống Kamala Harris, ông Trump đă lặp lại các tin đồn vô căn cứ rằng người di dân Haiti tại Springfield “ thịt chó và mèo” của cư dân sinh sống trong khu vực.” Vào đầu tuần, ứng cử viên phó tổng thống của ông Trump, Thượng nghị sĩ JD Vance đă chia sẻ tuyên bố này trên mạng xă hội, nói rằng “có nhiều báo cáo cho thấy” thú cưng của người dân đă bị bắt cóc và ăn thịt bởi những người di dân bất hợp pháp. Thống đốc DeWine đă lên tiếng bảo vệ hàng ngh́n người di dân Haiti đang sống ở Springfield, nhưng lưu ư rằng có những thách thức đi kèm với 15,000 người di dân sinh sống tại thành phố có dân số dưới 60,000 người trong vài năm qua. Thống đốc cho biết một trong những thách thức là y tế và dạy những người mới đến cách lái xe theo luật Hoa Kỳ.
