9)Fact Check-Images do not show ballots dumped during 2022 midterm elections
Reverse image search reveals that the two photographs used in the tweet pre-date the midterm elections.
The image on the left that appears to show envelopes strewn across the side of a road featured in a FOX 11 news article in February 2021 (see photo 12 in the slideshow) (here).
Per FOX 11, the image was part of a series of photographs released to the outlet by the Outagamie County Sheriff’s Office and shows absentee ballots among other mail found in a ditch in Greenwich in September 2019.
The image on the right was also not captured in 2022. The photograph featured in news reports published in October 2020 (here), (here).
The news outlets were reporting on a U.S. Postal Service (USPS) mail carrier from Hudson County who was arrested on Oct 7, 2020, for discarding post, including 99 general election ballots intended to be delivered to West Orange residents (here).
The description of the account in question also indicates that the profile is satirical in nature: “Speculation News, because it's all made up anyway” (archive.ph/vveHK).
Meanwhile, Pam Smith, president of the non-governmental organization Verified Voting, told Reuters that the organization has seen “no evidence” to support the claim that thousands of ballots have been dumped during the midterm elections.
“Election officials are working to ensure that every eligible vote is counted accurately,” Smith said.
10)Fact Check-Joe Biden did not announce plan to cheat by ‘dumping ballots’ during U.S. midterms; Vote ‘spikes’ are not evidence of fraud
False. Joe Biden did not announce a plan to cheat or “dump ballots” during the U.S. midterm elections, and experts told Reuters that a “spike” in votes is not evidence of a fraudulent election.
Users making this claim refer to remarks by Biden on standing up for democracy on Nov. 2 in which he indeed noted that “it takes time to count all legitimate ballots in a legal and orderly manner” and that “it’s important for citizens to be patient” (
here).
A video of Biden’s remarks, where he begins speaking about counting ballots, can be seen around the 16:44 timestamp (
here).
But nowhere in the speech does Biden “announce” cheating or dumping ballots during the midterm elections. Instead, he mentioned how “more and more ballots are cast in early voting or by mail in America” and that “many states don’t start counting those ballots until after the polls close on November 8th.”
“That means, in some cases, we won’t know the winner of the election for a few days — until after a few days after the election,” Biden said during the speech.
11)Supposed 'Ballot Drops' Did Not Swing 2022 Election Results
A throwback to 2020, these claims attempt to frame legitimately cast mail-in ballots as invalid.
During the 2020 presidential election, far-right conspiracy blog The Gateway Pundit aggressively pushed the notion, still championed by former U.S. President Donald Trump two years later, that nefarious "dumps" or "drops" of allegedly illegitimate ballots pushed Democratic candidates over the edge to win in several contests. Such assertions characterize the fact that absentee ballots — whose use the GOP has aggressively shunned since 2020 — take longer to count and swing Democratic as evidence of fraud.
Prior to Election Day 2022, many experts suggested that bad actors would frame the addition of mailed ballots to a vote count as evidence of fraud. The Gateway Pundit, after initially declaring victory, predictably delivered these unfounded talking points after it became clear their expectations had not been met.
As was the case in 2020, these 2022 election claims weaponize well-understood voting phenomena as supposed evidence of fraud by asserting that "drops" of ballots are mysterious or unexplained. Because that is not the case, the claim is false.
