Police have confirmed that the two alleged gunmen responsible for the deadly attack on a Jewish celebration at Sydney's Bondi Beach were a father and son. This incident, which authorities are calling a targeted antisemitic attack, has resulted in the death of 16 people, making it Australia's worst instance of gun violence in nearly three decades. The 50-year-old father was killed at the scene, while his 24-year-old son remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The tragic event on Sunday saw 40 people injured and still hospitalized, including two police officers reported to be in serious but stable condition. The victims of the attack ranged widely in age, from 10 to 87. Witnesses recounted the horrifying 10-minute span of the attack at the popular beach, where hundreds of people scattered across the sand and into nearby streets to escape the violence. Approximately 1,000 people were attending the targeted Hanukkah event in a small park off the beach.

In the wake of the tragedy, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned the attack as "an act of pure evil, an act of antisemitism, an act of terrorism on our shores." He emphasized national solidarity with the Jewish community and vowed to combat antisemitism. The incident has drawn international condemnation, with world leaders, including the U.S. President and French President, expressing their condolences and support. The attack adds to a string of antisemitic incidents Australia has experienced since the conflict began in Gaza in October 2023.

A heroic bystander, identified as Ahmed al Ahmed, has been credited with saving lives after he tackled and disarmed one of the armed men. The 43-year-old fruit shop owner sustained two gunshot wounds and underwent surgery. His life-saving actions have led to a massive public outpouring of support, with an online fundraising page quickly raising over A$350,000 for him. Police confirmed that only two attackers were involved and have since raided their home, but they have not released the shooters' names or details of their citizenship. It was disclosed that the father had held a firearms license since 2015 and possessed six licensed weapons.

The normally vibrant Bondi Beach area is now subdued, marked by a solemn vibe and a makeshift memorial featuring flowers and both Israeli and Australian flags. Locals described the shock of the event, with one resident recounting how she sheltered people who were fleeing the shooting. For many, Sunday's violence recalls the 1996 Port Arthur massacre, the country's previous worst mass shooting, highlighting the extreme rarity and shock of such an attack in Australia.
