Visa Lottery Halted After MIT and Brown University Killings
 

Following a string of violent incidents at two of the nation’s most prestigious universities, the Trump administration has officially halted the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. This decision, announced by Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, comes after federal investigators identified the suspect in the Brown University and MIT killings as a beneficiary of the "green card lottery." At the President's direction, the administration has frozen the program indefinitely, with officials characterizing the system as a threat to national security.

The Violent Path of the Suspect
The investigation centers on Claudio Neves Valente, a 48-year-old Portuguese national who launched a series of deadly attacks across New England. The violence began at Brown University, where Valente stormed a campus building, killing two students and leaving nine others wounded. The carnage continued two days later when Valente targeted Nuno Loureiro, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Police believe the professor was a former acquaintance of Valente from an academic program they both attended in Portugal decades ago.

The suspect’s Immigration History
Central to the government’s policy shift is Valente’s history within the U.S. immigration system. Secretary Noem confirmed that the suspect entered the country in 2017 after winning a spot in the diversity lottery, which provides up to 55,000 visas annually to individuals from countries with lower immigration rates. While U.S. Attorney Leah Foley noted that Valente had also spent significant time in the country on an F1 student visa between 2000 and 2021, the administration has focused on his permanent residency status as justification for shuttering the lottery program.

The Hunt and Conclusion of the Crisis
The search for Valente ended in New Hampshire, where authorities discovered his body in a storage unit. According to Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez, the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, bringing a grim end to a high-stakes, multi-state manhunt. Despite Valente’s "sophisticated" efforts to evade capture—which included switching rental car plates and using untraceable communication devices—investigator s were able to track him using a combination of financial records and digital surveillance.

The academic community is currently mourning the loss of three individuals: MIT professor Nuno Loureiro and Brown University students Ella Cook and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov.
