COVID-19 Shots Are NOT Set To Contribute To The 'Decimation Of The World's Population'

By Dana Ford

Are COVID-19 shots set to contribute to the "decimation of the world's population"? No, that's not true: The claim is one of several presented without credible evidence during a video interview with Dr. Sucharit Bhakdi, a German microbiologist. He also alleges that the COVID-19 pandemic is "fake," that PCR tests lie, that the success of vaccines is measured by their impact on fatality rates rather than infection rates and that COVID-19 vaccines are killing people. All are recycled claims that have been debunked before by Lead Stories and others, including medical experts.

The nearly 40-minute interview was the basis of a post (archived here) published by The New American magazine on April 16, 2021. The post, titled "COVID Shots to 'Decimate World Population,' Warns Dr. Bhakdi," opened:

In this exclusive interview with The New American magazine's Senior Editor Alex Newman, world-renown German-Thai-American microbiologist Dr. Sucharit Bhakdi warns that the COVID hysteria is based on lies and that the COVID 'vaccines' are set to cause a global catastrophe and a decimation of the human population.

Users on social media saw this title, description and thumbnail:

Bhakdi and his wife, Karina Reiss, are the authors of a book titled: "Corona, False Alarm?"

There's no evidence the pandemic is fake. At the time of writing -- April 28, 2021 -- COVID-19 has killed more than 3.1 million people worldwide, including more than 570,000 in the United States and 82,000 in Germany.

There's also no evidence that PCR tests lie. Lead Stories has covered this claim before. See here for our previous debunk, which found that PCR tests accurately confirm the presence of the virus.

At higher amplification cycle thresholds, the virus may not be viable and a patient may not be infectious, but that doesn't mean the patient doesn't have the disease. The PCR test is the most widely used and trusted test for diagnosing COVID-19.

Around the 15-minute mark, Bhakdi began talking about the COVID-19 vaccines and fatality rates. He said that people under 70 have only a 0.05% chance of dying from COVID-19, a claim he's made -- and that Lead Stories has covered -- before. He then said that any vaccine would have to lower that number.

That's not true because that's not how vaccines work.

Vaccines primarily work by reducing the risk of infection, not infection fatality rates, as Lead Stories has written about before. The hope with the COVID-19 vaccines, as with all vaccines, is that people who otherwise would have contracted the disease, won't get it.

No, there is no evidence that spending time around vaccinated people causes death or disease

By Madison Czopek

• The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines cannot affect people who are not vaccinated.

• There is no evidence the COVID-19 vaccines cause infertility or pregnancy complications.

A Facebook video claims that people who aren’t vaccinated against COVID-19 should "beware" because being around people who have received the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines could cause "death and disease."

There is no evidence anyone has died after being close to someone who received an mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

Experts say there is no way for people to shed mRNA or spike proteins after they’ve been vaccinated. The mRNA COVID-19 vaccines cannot affect people who are not vaccinated.

We rate this claim False.

No, vaccinated people don’t make up 60% of new COVID-19 cases

By Gabrielle Settles

The CDC reports that out of 87 million fully vaccinated people, 7,157 people had breakthrough cases of COVID-19. That’s 0.008% of all fully vaccinated people.

A study of healthcare workers and frontline personnel who received the Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines showed that the vaccines were 80% effective after the first dose, and 90% after the second.

An Instagram post credits a Yale professor as saying that out of the new COVID-19 cases, 60% are patients who have had the vaccine.

The CDC reported that as of April 20, only 7,157 breakthrough cases have been reported out of 87 million fully vaccinated people. That’s 0.008% of the vaccinated population.

Studies show that the mRNA vaccines are 80% effective after one dose, and 90% effective after two doses.

Despite all the talk, COVID-19 vaccination does not infect people with shingles
If Your Time is short

By Julie Appleby

COVID-19 vaccinations do not infect recipients with shingles or any form of herpes virus, despite some misleading headlines. It is plausible, but unproven, that COVID-19 vaccines could fuel a reactivation of existing, but dormant, herpes virus in some people.
An Israeli study found that six women out of a group of nearly 500 people came down with shingles in the days and weeks following vaccination. All six had autoimmune diseases making them more susceptible to shingles. Also, the study was not designed to determine cause and effect.
Some other vaccines have shown to reactivate the virus that causes shingles, but so far there is no definitive proof that COVID-19 vaccines do so.

An online post claims the COVID-19 vaccines cause shingles or other dangerous skin conditions.

Although it contains a sliver of truth, it ignores important information. For instance, the evidence to date indicates this is an area to continue monitoring, but no direct link has been established between COVID-19 vaccination and shingles or other serious skin conditions.

The study cited was not intended to prove cause and effect, and it was looking at patients who already had suppressed immune systems that made them more likely to get shingles whether they had a vaccination or not.

We rate this statement Mostly False.
