Chiều 2/4, sau khi Quốc hội miễn nhiệm chức vụ Chủ tịch nước đối với Tổng Bí thư Nguyễn Phú Trọng, đồng chí Nguyễn Xuân Phúc, Thủ tướng Chính phủ nhiệm kỳ 2016-2021, được giới thiệu kế nhiệm.
Đây là lần đầu tiên Quốc hội bầu một Thủ tướng đương nhiệm làm Chủ tịch nước.
Theo chương trình dự kiến, các đại biểu Quốc hội sẽ bầu Chủ tịch nước vào sáng 5/4.
Việc miễn nhiệm và bầu, phê chuẩn nhân sự tại kỳ họp lần này thực hiện theo yêu cầu bố trí, sắp xếp nhân sự cấp cao của Đảng, Nhà nước sau Đại hội XIII, với khoảng 25 chức danh được kiện toàn hoặc thay đổi vị trí công tác.
