stated on November 9, 2020 in a Tweet:
A “system glitch” in Wisconsin that “swapped votes” between Biden and Trump helped swing the state to Biden.
An article baselessly questioning vote totals in Wisconsin was given a wider audience when Eric Trump tweeted it to his 4.5 million followers.
The article was published on Nov. 9 by the Gateway Pundit, a far-right news outlet that has spread misinformation in the past.
"System 'Glitch' Also Uncovered In Wisconsin - Reversal of Swapped Votes Removes Lead from Joe Biden," the headline reads.
The body of the article focuses on the way Fox News reported election results in Rock County, Wis., which includes Janesville and is home to about 160,000 people.
At 11:43 p.m. on election night, Fox reported that 46,649 votes in the county had gone to Donald Trump and 37,133 had gone to Joe Biden. However, 14 minutes later, the vote totals had swapped, with Biden leading Trump 46,649 to 37,133.
The article suggests that Fox’s initial numbers from Rock County were accurate and that votes were taken from Trump and transferred to Biden.
This claim doesn’t hold up to scrutiny.
Rock County Clerk Lisa Tollefson told PolitiFact that the official Rock County election website never reported that Trump led Biden 46,649 to 37,133.
"There was never any error on our website," she said. "It was probably an input error on the (Fox News) website."
According to the Rock County elections website, 46,649 votes in Rock County were cast for Biden, and 37,133 were cast for Trump. The website was last updated at 11:43 p.m. on election night, the same minute Fox erroneously swapped the vote totals of the candidates in its reporting.
Tollefson said that her office is currently trying to figure out why Fox initially reported the numbers inaccurately. She speculated that Fox had either incorrectly tabulated the results or that a Rock County stringer had accidentally swapped the names of the two candidates while reporting them to the Fox decision desk.
Fox partly bases its reporting on election data from the Associated Press. We couldn’t confirm whether the Associated Press also made a similar error.
However, the glitch didn’t show up in numbers reported by other news outlets. CNN told us that they never had to reverse their Rock County vote totals and that their numbers always showed 46,649 votes for Biden and 37,133 for Trump. Rock County’s official vote totals are consistent with those reported by the New York Times, NBC, and the Washington Post.
Biden currently leads Trump in Wisconsin by over 20,000 votes with over 99% of the count reported. Even if the Gateway Pundit’s claims were accurate and Fox’s initial numbers were correct, the discrepancy wouldn’t be enough to swing the state to Trump, as the article’s headline asserts.
An article tweeted by Eric Trump says that a "system glitch" in Wisconsin that "swapped votes" between Biden and Trump helped swing the state to Biden.
A Rock County election official told us that there was no glitch in the official Rock County website. The discrepancy apparently arose when Fox News accidentally swapped the candidate’s names while reporting the county’s vote totals.
Other news outlets reported Rock County’s vote totals correctly.
We rate this statement False.
