Venice protests target billionaire Jeff Bezos over mounting grievances
New Tab ↗
|
Recent protests in Venice against the high-profile wedding of Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez have brought to light a range of global concerns, including mass tourism, unaffordable rents, worker exploitation, inequality, and elitism. Although local politicians dismissed the protesters as a small minority, the international visibility provided by Bezos's fame and Venice's iconic setting allowed their message to spread worldwide.
Banners such as "No Space for Bezos" draped over the Rialto Bridge and a large canvas in St. Mark's Square urging the tech billionaire to pay more taxes garnered global attention. Due to concerns about potential disruptions, Bezos and Sanchez relocated their largest celebrity party from the city's central district to a more secluded venue in the eastern part of the lagoon. Tommaso Cacciari, a leader of the "No Space for Bezos" movement, told Reuters that the wedding underscored the perception of Venice as merely a "set, a stage, or an amusement park."
On Saturday, the final protest saw approximately 1,000 residents and activists gather in front of Venice's train station, marching about 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) to the Rialto Bridge. Protesters carried signs like "Kisses yes, Bezos no" and "No space for Bezos" with a rocket, referencing his Blue Origin space company.
In contrast, Venetian businesses and politicians generally welcomed the event, emphasizing its positive economic impact. Luca Zaia, the regional governor of Veneto, expressed pride in Venice hosting the wedding.
However, critics like 24-year-old university student Alice Bazzoli called Bezos a "hypocrite" for donating 3 million euros (US$3.5 million) to Venice while his private jets and yachts contribute to the pollution of the fragile ecosystem. Bezos and Sanchez each contributed 1 million euros to three Venetian organizations: CORILA (an academic consortium studying the lagoon), UNESCO's local office, and Venice International University. Bazzoli expressed a desire for Venice to prioritize its citizens with affordable housing, lamenting that students are being priced out as the best accommodations are offered to tourists.
Andrea Segre, a 49-year-old Italian film director and Venice native, noted that the city is also displacing long-term residents. He stated that "People aged 25 to 35 — the age group that starts families — cannot afford to live in Venice. The consequence is a lack of diversity and social liveliness." Venice's historic city center has seen a rapid decline in population, now housing fewer than 50,000 residents, a significant drop from over 100,000 about 50 years ago, largely due to the rising cost of living.
While Venice has hosted other celebrity weddings, such as George Clooney's in 2014, Bezos's nuptials generated more significant backlash due to his corporate and political influence. As the world's fourth richest man, the Amazon founder has ties to U.S. President Donald Trump, with Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner reportedly attending the wedding.
Twenty-eight-year-old student Giulia Cacopardo told Reuters that "Bezos is the embodiment of the most absolute wealth gained through the exploitation of everything around you." Amazon has faced criticism and strikes from trade unions in Italy over its labor practices and scrutiny regarding tax compliance. In February, Reuters reported that Italian prosecutors were investigating alleged tax evasion by Amazon worth $1.2 billion. Protest leader Cacciari further stated that he would have protested against Bezos regardless of his mode of arrival, due to his perceived "practical, material, and political" contributions to Donald Trump's re-election campaign.

Group of wealthy people to buy TikTok, Trump says
New Tab ↗
|
In a Fox News interview aired on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has identified a buyer for the short-video app TikTok, describing them as a group of "very wealthy people." Trump stated that he plans to reveal their identities in approximately two weeks.
During the interview on "Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo," Trump indicated that the proposed deal would likely require approval from China, and he anticipated that Chinese President Xi Jinping would grant it.
Earlier this month, the U.S. president had extended the deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell TikTok's U.S. assets to September 17, despite a law that mandated a sale or shutdown if no significant progress was made.
A previous deal earlier in the spring would have spun off TikTok's U.S. operations into a new American firm, primarily owned and operated by U.S. investors. However, this arrangement was put on hold after China signaled its disapproval, following Trump's imposition of substantial tariffs on Chinese goods.
Trump explicitly stated, "We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way. I think I'll need probably China's approval. I think President Xi will probably do it."
A U.S. law passed in 2024 had set a deadline of January 19 for TikTok to cease operations unless ByteDance completed the divestment of its U.S. assets or showed significant progress towards a sale. Trump, who believes the app helped him gain support from young voters in the previous November's presidential election, has now extended this deadline three times.

South Korea seeking extension to US 90-day tariff pause
New Tab ↗
|
South Korea is aiming to secure an extension of a 90-day pause in U.S. tariffs, which is set to expire on July 9, as ongoing trade negotiations between Seoul and Washington are unlikely to conclude before the deadline, a senior South Korean trade official said Monday.
The request comes after high-level trade talks between the two countries last week — the first such discussions under South Korea’s new administration — along with three rounds of working-level negotiations since late April, when both sides agreed to develop a trade package to avoid the reimposition of tariffs.
"It seems some countries will reach a deal by July 8, some might be granted an extension to continue negotiations, while others will decide if they want to continue negotiating under tariffs or not," the official told reporters.
South Korea is hoping to be among those granted extra time, with a decision expected from the U.S. on July 8, just one day before the pause expires.
Although South Korea already imposes almost zero tariffs on U.S. imports under the existing bilateral free trade agreement (KORUS FTA), the U.S. reportedly raised concerns about non-tariff barriers during last week's discussions. These could include regulatory, licensing, or standards-related obstacles that U.S. exporters say limit market access in South Korea.
The trade official noted that currency and defense burden-sharing issues—longstanding points of contention—are being addressed through separate diplomatic channels. Approximately 28,500 U.S. troops are stationed in South Korea as part of a mutual defense arrangement, and former President Donald Trump has frequently criticized Seoul over its contribution to the cost of this deployment.
The outcome of the tariff extension request and broader trade negotiations will be key to shaping future economic ties between the two close allies, particularly as the U.S. continues a broader review of global tariff policies under the Trump administration.

Australian airline Qantas says hit by 'significant' cyberattack
New Tab ↗
|
Australian airline Qantas announced on Wednesday that it is investigating a major cybersecurity breach that exposed sensitive personal data of up to six million customers.
The airline revealed that hackers gained unauthorized access to a system operated by a third-party provider for one of its customer contact centers. The compromised platform contained details such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth.
In a public statement, Qantas confirmed:
“There are 6 million customers that have service records in this platform… we are continuing to investigate the proportion of the data that has been stolen, though we expect it will be significant.”
Importantly, credit card information and passport numbers were not stored in the affected system, Qantas said.
Despite the seriousness of the breach, Qantas reassured the public that flight operations and airline safety were not impacted by the incident.
Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson offered a formal apology, emphasizing that the company had reported the breach to Australia’s National Cyber Security Coordinator.
“We sincerely apologize to our customers and we recognize the uncertainty this will cause,” Hudson said. “Our customers trust us with their personal information and we take that responsibility seriously.”
The incident marks another high-profile cyberattack in Australia, raising concerns about data security practices among major corporations. Further updates are expected as Qantas continues its investigation into the full extent of the breach.

US Senate approves divisive Trump spending bill
New Tab ↗
|
The U.S. Senate, led by Republicans, narrowly approved President Donald Trump’s sweeping domestic policy bill on Tuesday, pushing forward a controversial package that includes steep welfare cuts and adds another $3 trillion to the national debt.
After a grueling 24-hour "vote-a-rama" during which Democrats challenged numerous provisions, Senate Majority Leader John Thune managed to unify enough Republicans to secure a 50-50 tie. Vice President JD Vance cast the deciding vote in favor of the bill.
The legislation now heads to the House of Representatives, where it faces serious hurdles. Democrats remain firmly opposed, while some Republicans are uneasy about the bill’s enormous cost and its sharp reductions in healthcare and food assistance programs.
At the heart of the bill is a proposed $4.5 trillion extension of Trump-era tax cuts. To offset some of the cost, the package includes $1.2 trillion in savings — largely by cutting Medicaid and federal food aid. Analysts estimate that these healthcare reductions could leave around 12 million low-income and disabled Americans without coverage.
In addition, the bill rescinds billions in green energy tax incentives while allocating $350 billion for border security and Trump’s expanded deportation efforts.
President Trump insisted the bill must be signed into law by the July 4 Independence Day holiday. “It’s going to get in, it’s going to pass, and we’re going to be very happy,” he told reporters confidently.
But opposition has been fierce. The bill is one of the least popular in recent memory, and Democrats hope to use public dissatisfaction as fuel for their bid to retake the House in the 2026 midterms.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer condemned the legislation as a betrayal of working-class Americans. “Senate Republicans today gave billionaires the biggest tax break in history — paid for by taking health care from the poor and food from hungry children,” he said.
Even within the GOP, discontent has emerged. Some Senate Republicans voiced concern over the projected $3.3 trillion increase in deficits over a decade. Among the most vocal critics was Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and former Trump ally, who objected to the rollback of green energy incentives and the mounting debt burden.
Trump responded furiously, threatening to revoke government contracts for Musk’s companies and even floated the idea of deporting him. “Without subsidies, Elon would probably have to close up shop and head back home to South Africa,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Although the House already passed an earlier version of the legislation, the new Senate changes mean the bill must return to the lower chamber for final approval. That process could be contentious. House Speaker Mike Johnson will need to rally nearly every Republican, as the party can afford to lose only three votes.
Hardline conservatives in the House are particularly angry over what they describe as $651 billion in additional deficit spending added by the Senate’s version.
Still, Johnson vowed to push the bill through swiftly. “The House will work quickly to pass the One Big Beautiful Bill that enacts President Trump's full America First agenda by the Fourth of July,” he said.
He concluded with a message of urgency and resolve: “The American people gave us a clear mandate, and after four years of Democrat failure, we intend to deliver without delay.”

Powell Is Staying at the Fed, With Trump Appointments Possibly Limited
New Tab ↗
|
U.S. Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell is set to begin two days of congressional testimony on Tuesday, facing pressure from President Donald Trump over interest rates. Despite Trump's repeated calls for rate cuts and musings about replacing him, Powell's position appears secure due to a recent Supreme Court ruling.
Last month, the Supreme Court acknowledged the unique status of the Federal Reserve, confirming that its seven governors are immune from removal over policy disagreements. This ruling reinforces that Powell is likely to serve out his term, which ends in May 2026. Experts like Krishna Guha, vice chair at Evercore ISI and a former New York Fed official, suggest that attempting to name a successor prematurely, before a board seat opens or Powell's term concludes, could create market confusion and actually hinder the goal of achieving rate cuts.
Powell's semi-annual Capitol Hill hearings, starting with the House Financial Services Committee, will likely see him address policymakers who are hesitant to cut interest rates. This reluctance stems from the ongoing uncertainty surrounding the administration's tariff policies and their potential impact on inflation, economic growth, and employment.
The recent U.S. bombing of Iran and the broader conflict between Iran and Israel could also be a factor in Powell's testimony. While oil prices have remained relatively steady so far, any escalation leading to rising oil prices could influence the Fed's economic outlook, which has already been revised towards slower growth and higher inflation since the Trump administration initiated its tariff campaign. The current situation in the Middle East, including a potential "complete and total" ceasefire between Israel and Iran as announced by President Trump, will undoubtedly be a topic of interest for lawmakers and a consideration for the Fed's future monetary policy decisions.

Gates Foundation to Commit $1.6 Billion for Gavi Vaccine Alliance
New Tab ↗
|
The Gates Foundation announced on Tuesday a significant commitment of $1.6 billion over the next five years to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. Gavi is a public-private partnership dedicated to procuring vaccines for children in the world's most impoverished regions.
Bill Gates, chair of the foundation, emphasized the urgency of this funding. He stated that global child mortality rates are likely to increase this year due to substantial cuts in foreign aid, making Gavi's work crucial to preventing further deaths.
Gavi is currently aiming to secure $9 billion in funding for its operations from 2026 to 2030. A pledging event, co-hosted by the European Union and the Gates Foundation, is scheduled for Wednesday in Brussels to achieve this goal. The alliance plays a vital role in collaborating with governments to fund the purchase of vaccines that protect against deadly diseases such as measles and diphtheria.
This renewed commitment from the Gates Foundation comes amid concerns about potential funding shortfalls. The Trump administration has previously indicated plans to cut its annual contribution to Gavi, which currently stands at approximately $300 million. Sania Nishtar, Gavi's CEO, warned that a loss of U.S. funding could result in an additional 1.2 million deaths over the next five years.

6 foods that help combat fatty liver disease
New Tab ↗
|
Dr. Nguyen Anh Tuan, Head of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery at Central Military Hospital 108, explains that a liver is considered fatty when fat comprises more than 5-10% of its total weight. This accumulation increases the liver's susceptibility to damage, potentially leading to inflammation, fibrosis, or even liver failure. He stresses that dietary and lifestyle modifications are crucial for improving this condition.
Here are six specific foods that experts recommend incorporating into daily meals to support liver health and recovery:
Turmeric: This spice aids in preventing fat accumulation in the liver by enhancing fat metabolism and reducing existing fat content.
Lime: Limes are abundant in vitamin C, a natural antioxidant that stimulates the liver's production of glutathione, a vital compound for detoxification. They also contain naringenin, which has been shown to decrease liver inflammation associated with fatty liver disease.
Apple Cider Vinegar: Often considered a natural remedy for fatty liver, apple cider vinegar may assist with weight loss and help diminish fat storage within the liver.
Green Tea: Rich in antioxidants and essential nutrients, green tea supports fat burning and can help lower the risk of fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
Dandelion: Traditionally used as a liver tonic, dandelion assists in fat breakdown and helps activate liver function, making it particularly beneficial for individuals with NAFLD linked to obesity.
Papaya: Both papaya fruit and its seeds are believed to contribute to the healing of liver damage, including fibrosis. The fruit helps burn fat in the liver and is considered advantageous for managing fatty liver disease.
Dr. Tuan advises that patients should regularly monitor their weight and limit their fat intake to reduce liver fat levels. For those who are overweight or obese, achieving gradual weight loss is a key step towards improving liver function and overall health.

7 ways to relieve liver heat
New Tab ↗
|
Dr. Huynh Van Trung from the Center for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Laparoscopic Surgery at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City states that "liver heat," a condition indicating liver inflammation or dysfunction often caused by unhealthy habits or underlying diseases, can be effectively managed through a combination of dietary and lifestyle adjustments.
Early signs of liver dysfunction are often subtle, including fatigue, loss of appetite, and abdominal discomfort. If ignored, these symptoms can worsen to jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes), itching, bloating, nausea, bleeding gums, insomnia, and general weakness. Dr. Trung stresses that medical treatment combined with healthy habits is crucial for managing this condition.
Here are seven expert-recommended strategies to alleviate liver heat:
Increase Vegetable and Protein Intake: Consuming more leafy greens and fruits aids in liver cleansing and supports its natural detoxification processes. Protein helps stabilize blood sugar and body weight, thereby reducing the liver's workload.
Stay Well-Hydrated: Adequate water intake is essential for regulating body temperature, flushing toxins through urine and sweat, and combating oxidative stress. Beyond plain water, beneficial beverages for liver health include winter melon juice, brown rice water, green tea, and various herbal teas.
Reduce Carbohydrate Consumption: Foods high in refined carbohydrates, such as bread, rice, noodles, and potatoes, can be converted into fat and contribute to fatty liver disease. Additionally, fried foods, processed snacks, canned goods, red meat, and fresh bamboo shoots should be limited to prevent overwhelming the liver.
Avoid Alcohol: Limiting or completely avoiding alcohol consumption allows liver cells to regenerate and helps reduce inflammation within the organ.
Ensure Sufficient Rest: Aiming for at least eight hours of sleep per night, ideally before 11 p.m., provides the liver with crucial time to repair itself and carry out its vital detoxification functions.
Manage Stress: Engaging in stress-reducing activities like reading, meditation, or listening to music can positively impact both liver health and overall digestive well-being.
Exercise Regularly: Incorporating 30 minutes of moderate physical activity into your daily routine can boost metabolism, improve overall health, and significantly lower the risk of developing liver heat.

4 food types to avoid for people with fatty liver disease
New Tab ↗
|
Individuals diagnosed with fatty liver disease should carefully manage their diet to prevent the condition from worsening. Dr. Vu Truong Khanh, Head of Gastroenterology at Tam Anh General Hospital in Hanoi, explains that fatty liver arises from either excessive fat production or inefficient fat metabolism, leading to fat accumulation in liver cells. This condition can stem from heavy alcohol consumption, hepatitis infections, or metabolic disorders like type 2 diabetes, and if left unmanaged, it can progress to more severe liver diseases such as hepatitis, cirrhosis, or even liver cancer.
While often benign in its early stages with minimal impact on liver function, fatty liver can be effectively controlled through appropriate medical treatment and significant lifestyle adjustments. Dr. Khanh particularly emphasizes the critical role of diet in both treatment and prevention, advising patients to restrict the following four food categories:
1. Sugary Foods:
A high intake of sugar is a major contributor to weight gain, obesity, and type 2 diabetes, all of which elevate the risk of fat accumulating in the liver. When the body consumes more calories than it uses for energy, the excess is stored as triglycerides, which, if not efficiently metabolized, build up in the liver. Furthermore, sugar-rich diets promote insulin resistance, impairing glucose uptake by cells and leading to elevated blood sugar levels. This, in turn, prompts the pancreas to produce more insulin, further exacerbating fat buildup in the liver. Individuals with high blood sugar or insulin resistance should avoid sweets like candy, ice cream, and sugary desserts, and limit high-fructose fruits such as lychees, apples, bananas, and grapes.
2. Fried and High-Cholesterol Foods:
Foods that are fried or high in cholesterol, including animal fat, organ meats, red meat, egg yolks, butter, cheese, and processed meats (like sausages and bacon), can significantly raise blood triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels. This places additional strain on the liver. Instead, patients are encouraged to use plant-based oils, increase their consumption of leafy greens, and opt for omega-3-rich fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna, which can help reduce liver fat.
3. Canned and High-Sodium Foods:
Frequent consumption of salty foods, such as pickles, cured meats, fast food, and canned goods, leads to excessive salt intake, which can increase fat deposits in the liver. Diets high in sodium may also elevate leptin levels, cause fluid retention, increase body fat percentage, and promote insulin resistance. Over time, an overload of salt can trigger liver inflammation and fibrosis, accelerating the progression of fatty liver disease. Dr. Khanh advises families to lightly season meals and limit daily salt intake to less than 6 grams.
4. Carbohydrate-Rich Foods:
Foods abundant in carbohydrates, particularly refined ones like white rice, potatoes, bread, instant noodles, crackers, and rice cakes, can cause excess carbohydrates to be converted into fat, which may then accumulate in the liver. A beneficial dietary change involves switching to whole grains and brown rice, which increases fiber intake, reduces overall fat consumption, and helps lower inflammation—all crucial factors in managing fatty liver disease.

11 foods good for people with elevated liver enzymes
New Tab ↗
|
According to Dr. Nguyen Anh Duy Tung from the Nutrihome Nutrition Clinic System, diet plays a crucial role in managing elevated liver enzyme levels. He emphasizes that reducing carbohydrate and saturated fat intake has been particularly effective for many patients. Here's a breakdown of foods recommended for those with high liver enzymes:
1. Garlic:
Garlic is rich in allicin, a potent antioxidant that helps lower liver enzymes (AST, ALT) and blood lipid levels (triglycerides, cholesterol). Its benefits extend to anti-inflammatory and antioxidant protection, and it aids in preventing and treating hyperlipidemia and fatty liver disease.
2. Olive Oil:
This oil is a good source of monounsaturated fat, particularly oleic acid, which helps reduce blood fat levels (triglycerides and cholesterol), thereby supporting a decrease in liver enzymes. Olive oil also contains antioxidants like vitamin E and polyphenols, protecting the liver from free radical damage and oxidative stress.
3. Omega-3 Rich Foods:
Omega-3 fatty acids are vital for liver health, primarily by preventing fat accumulation. Including them in the diet can help lower GGT enzyme levels. Good sources include avocados, salmon, herring, tuna, mackerel, vegetable oils, margarine, legumes, and various seeds.
4. Berries:
"Superfoods" like strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and cranberries are highly recommended due to their high fiber content, which helps reduce fat absorption and aids in enzyme level control. Their rich antioxidant profile (vitamin C, flavonoids, anthocyanins) also protects the liver from oxidative stress and supports its recovery.
5. Walnuts:
Fatty liver disease is a common cause of elevated liver enzymes. Walnuts contain omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, along with polyphenol antioxidants, which are effective in treating fatty liver disease and subsequently lowering liver enzyme levels.
6. Avocados:
Despite being high in fat, avocados primarily contain monounsaturated fats that help reduce cholesterol levels and prevent inflammation-related liver damage caused by cholesterol. They also provide powerful compounds like vitamins E and C and polyphenols that aid liver tissue recovery and help normalize enzyme levels.
7. Green Tea:
Green tea's ability to lower liver enzymes is attributed to its high antioxidant content, especially polyphenols and catechins. These compounds help reduce oxidative stress in the liver, regulate blood pressure, and lower blood sugar, which collectively helps prevent fatty liver, diabetes, and liver damage.
8. Coffee:
Coffee consumption can help reduce liver enzyme levels, including AST, ALT, ALP, and GGT. However, it's crucial to drink it without refined sugar, opting for calorie-free sweeteners instead to avoid adding stress to the liver.
9. Leafy Greens:
Dark leafy greens are rich in folate (vitamin B9). A deficiency in folate can lead to increased ALT and GGT enzyme levels, indicating liver damage. Besides dark green vegetables, other folate-rich foods include various nuts, legumes, fruits, eggs, milk, and dairy products.
10. Cruciferous Vegetables:
These vegetables contain antioxidants and glucosinolates. Upon digestion, these compounds enhance the liver's production of detoxifying enzymes like glutathione S-transferase (GST), which assists in repairing damaged liver tissue and improving elevated liver enzyme levels.
11. Seeds and Nuts:
Many seeds contain ellagic acid, a polyphenol that helps prevent oxidative damage to the liver and supports the prevention of fatty liver and high enzyme levels. Seeds and nuts are also good sources of vitamin E, which can help reduce AST and ALT levels. Natural extracts such as Silybum marianum (milk thistle) and Wasabia japonica may also contribute to enhanced liver detoxification and healthier enzyme levels.

5 protein consumption mistakes that can harm your kidneys
New Tab ↗
|
While protein is crucial for energy, metabolism, fat burning, and muscle growth, improper consumption can significantly harm kidney function. Dr. Ha Tuan Hung, Deputy Head of Nephrology - Dialysis Department at Tam Anh General Hospital, highlights common mistakes that silently strain the kidneys.
1. Overconsumption of Animal Protein:
Eating too much animal protein over time forces the kidneys to process excess nitrogen, potentially leading to dehydration, increased urination, and a higher risk of kidney stones. A diet heavy in animal protein but lacking vegetables can also cause constipation due to insufficient fiber. The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) suggests a protein intake of approximately 0.5–0.8 grams per 0.45 kg of body weight (about 75–120 grams per day for a 68 kg person) to maintain a balanced diet. The American Heart Association (AHA) advises limiting lean meat to no more than 155 grams daily, spread across four to five meals weekly, while also restricting red meat, saturated fats, sodium, and sugar.
2. Relying on Low-Quality Protein Sources:
Protein from processed meats, canned foods, and items with preservatives is considered low-quality and can put extra strain on the kidneys. These foods often contain high levels of salt and additives, which the kidneys must work harder to filter. Processed meats, if consumed excessively, can lead to kidney function deterioration, especially in individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions. The AHA recommends prioritizing healthier, minimally processed protein sources such as fish, white meat, nuts, and legumes, as they offer high-quality protein with lower saturated fat and sodium content.
3. Imbalance of Protein and Other Nutrients:
The body can only efficiently absorb around 20–25 grams of protein per meal. Consuming more than this in one sitting means the surplus is either metabolized or excreted, increasing the workload on the kidneys. Dr. Hung suggests consuming easily absorbable proteins from sources like eggs, chicken breast, salmon, and Greek yogurt, while also incorporating a balance of plant-based protein sources.
4. Neglecting Other Essential Nutrients:
An unbalanced diet that is high in protein but deficient in carbohydrates and fats can disrupt the body's internal balance. When the body is forced to use protein for energy, it generates harmful metabolites like urea, which put extra strain on the kidneys for filtration and excretion, potentially leading to kidney impairment. A lack of vegetables and fiber-rich foods can also cause digestive issues like constipation and contribute to conditions such as dyslipidemia, fatty liver, and diabetes, all of which can further damage the kidneys. Maintaining a varied diet with balanced nutrition and adequate hydration is crucial for optimal health.
5. Insufficient Water Intake:
High protein intake increases the production of waste products like urea and uric acid, requiring the liver and kidneys to work harder to eliminate them. Without sufficient water, the kidneys can become overwhelmed, leading to dehydration, kidney stones, electrolyte imbalances, and a decline in kidney function. Therefore, a protein-rich diet combined with inadequate water intake can worsen kidney damage in those with existing chronic kidney disease and increase the risk for healthy individuals. To protect kidney health, it is essential to drink enough water daily, typically 2–3 liters, with increased intake for active individuals or those aiming for weight loss. Urine should be pale yellow and clear as an indicator of adequate hydration.

Thai police bust Korean scam gang, rescue kidnap victim
New Tab ↗
|
Thai authorities have successfully dismantled a scam operation in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri province, leading to the arrest of 20 South Korean nationals and one Chinese national. The arrests took place on June 21 at a luxurious pool villa, following a tip-off from the South Korean embassy.
Upon raiding the villa, officers from the Tourist Police, Immigration Bureau, and Bang Lamung police discovered a group of men working at computers. Some attempted to flee during the raid, resulting in one injury, but all were apprehended.
Investigators found a whiteboard detailing investment schemes in Korean, leading them to believe the villa was a hub for a larger criminal network. This network is suspected of engaging in "romance scams," where victims are deceived into fake relationships and then persuaded to transfer money.
Colonel Songwut Chueaplakij, superintendent of Tourist Police Division 2, stated that all confiscated items would be analyzed to confirm their use in illegal activities. The suspects are now facing legal proceedings under Thai law. It was also reported that a South Korean man who had allegedly been kidnapped and forced to work for the scam gang was rescued during the operation.

Trump says Iran and Israel agree to a ceasefire
New Tab ↗
|
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a "complete and total" ceasefire between Israel and Iran, intended to bring an end to what he termed "THE 12 DAY WAR." This declaration came shortly after both nations had threatened further attacks.
Trump, speaking on his Truth Social platform, indicated that the ceasefire would be implemented in a phased manner. He suggested that both Israel and Iran would have a limited time to conclude any ongoing military operations before the truce commenced. He congratulated both countries for their "Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence" in agreeing to end the conflict, which he believed "could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East."
Neither the Iranian U.N. mission nor the Israeli embassy in Washington immediately commented on Trump's announcement. However, hours earlier, three Israeli officials had signaled their intention to conclude their campaign in Iran soon, a message conveyed to the United States. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Sunday that Israel was "very, very close to completing" its objectives. A senior Iranian official later confirmed to Reuters that Tehran had agreed to the U.S.-proposed ceasefire.
This ceasefire follows a period of escalating hostilities. Over the weekend, U.S. bombers used 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on Iranian underground nuclear facilities, directly joining Israel's ongoing aerial campaign against Iran. Iran retaliated with a missile attack on a U.S. air base in Qatar, which reportedly caused no injuries, with Trump thanking Tehran for providing early notice of the strikes.
The news of the ceasefire was met positively by financial markets. S&P 500 futures rose by 0.4% late on Monday, indicating an expected gain for the U.S. stock market on Tuesday. Conversely, U.S. crude futures fell in early Asian trading hours on Tuesday to their lowest level in over a week, as concerns about potential oil supply disruptions in the region eased with the announcement of a truce.

Foreigners married to Vietnamese can gain citizenship without living in Vietnam
New Tab ↗
|
Effective July 1, 2025, Vietnam is implementing significant changes to its Law on Vietnamese Nationality, aiming to simplify the path to citizenship for certain foreign nationals. These revisions, recently approved by the National Assembly, are part of a broader government strategy to attract skilled professionals, investors, scientists, and experts, thereby fostering national development and integration.
A key amendment is the relaxation of naturalization requirements for foreigners with direct family ties to Vietnam. Previously, individuals applying for Vietnamese citizenship who had a Vietnamese spouse, child, parent, or grandparent faced stringent demands. They were required to demonstrate proficiency in the Vietnamese language, prove financial self-sufficiency, and have resided in Vietnam for at least five years. Under the new law, these specific requirements are now waived for applicants who can establish such familial connections. This also extends to children applying alongside a Vietnamese parent, for whom the legal capacity requirement will also be bypassed.
The eased conditions also apply to foreigners whose special contributions or proven benefits to Vietnam have been officially recognized. Similar to those with family ties, these individuals will no longer be subjected to the previous residency, language, or financial prerequisites, making it considerably easier for them to obtain Vietnamese citizenship.
Despite these relaxations, applicants are still expected to adhere to Vietnamese laws, show respect for local culture and customs, and demonstrate full legal capacity. However, as noted, the legal capacity requirement is waived for children applying concurrently with a Vietnamese parent. The government's aspiration is that these reforms will significantly enhance Vietnam's appeal to a global pool of talent.
In another notable shift, Vietnam will now permit some applicants to hold dual citizenship, a significant departure from its previous general principle of single nationality. This allowance is specifically for those with Vietnamese relatives who receive presidential approval. This expanded provision builds on earlier, more limited allowances for dual citizenship; for instance, before the new law's passage, statistics from March 2025 show that out of over 7,000 individuals granted Vietnamese nationality, 60 were permitted to hold dual citizenship, while 20 out of 311 approved for citizenship restoration also retained foreign citizenship. This indicates a clear trend towards greater flexibility. Furthermore, for those residing abroad, applications for Vietnamese citizenship can now be conveniently submitted through Vietnamese embassies or consulates.
The updated law also introduces more flexible naming conventions for naturalized citizens. While it remains a requirement for naturalized citizens to adopt a Vietnamese name or a name from one of Vietnam's ethnic groups, dual citizens are granted the unique allowance to combine a Vietnamese name with their original name. This combined name will be officially recognized in their citizenship documents, reflecting a more accommodating approach to their diverse identities. Some lawmakers had even advocated for further loosening naming requirements to better align with Vietnam's increasing global integration. It is important to note that while the law aims to attract talent and streamline the process, certain sensitive government and security roles will still mandate single Vietnamese nationality to ensure national loyalty and security.

US requires visa applications to reveal all social media usernames from past 5 years
New Tab ↗
|
Effective June 2025, individuals applying for F (student), M (vocational student), and J (exchange visitor) nonimmigrant visas to the United States are now mandated to disclose all social media usernames they have used over the past five years. This new requirement, announced by U.S. embassies, also stipulates that applicants must set the privacy settings of all their social media accounts to "public" to enable thorough vetting.
The U.S. State Department implemented these guidelines to bolster national security by allowing officials to scrutinize applicants' online activities. The goal is to identify potential threats that might not be detected through traditional background checks. This policy applies globally, impacting millions of students, scholars, and exchange visitors annually.
Embassies have emphasized that all information provided in visa applications must be truthful and accurate. Failing to disclose social media information or attempting to conceal activity could lead to visa denial and future ineligibility. Consular officers will be looking for signs of hostility towards the U.S., its citizens, culture, government, or founding principles, as well as advocacy for terrorist groups or unlawful antisemitic harassment or violence. They will also consider any behavior that suggests a lack of credibility or an intent to violate visa rules.
The State Department had temporarily halted the issuance of visas for foreign students in late May to develop these new social media guidelines. Visa appointments are now resuming, though applicants are advised to check embassy and consulate websites for availability, as the enhanced screening may lead to fewer appointments.
This move is part of broader U.S. immigration measures that have increased uncertainty for international students, including a new travel ban and visa restrictions on nationals from 19 countries that became effective on June 9. The new social media vetting applies to both new and returning applicants, and officials are instructed to review applicants' "entire online presence," not just social media, taking screenshots of any concerning material.

More than 53,000 evacuated in central China over heavy rain: state media
New Tab ↗
|
Heavy rainfall is currently affecting central and southern China, leading to significant evacuations in Hunan province. State news agency Xinhua reported that over 53,000 people in Hunan had been evacuated by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. The province is anticipating more torrential rain, with some isolated areas expected to experience "extremely heavy" downpours. Since Wednesday, certain parts of Hunan have already recorded over 400 millimeters (16 inches) of precipitation.
The China Meteorological Administration (CMA) has also issued warnings for heavy rain across southern and central China for Saturday, highlighting a "significant threat of mountain flood disasters" in some regions. This warning follows recent severe weather events, including the evacuation of nearly 70,000 people in southern China due to heavy flooding from Typhoon Wutip, which occurred earlier in June 2025. Last month, northern and central China experienced record-breaking heat in May, with temperatures in several major cities exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit).
China has consistently faced extreme weather, from intense heat and droughts to heavy rains and floods, over the past few summers. The country, while being the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is also a leader in renewable energy and aims to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2060. For context, last August, Typhoon Gaemi caused torrential rains in eastern mainland China after moving from the Philippines and Taiwan, resulting in at least 30 fatalities and dozens missing.

World awaits Iranian response after US hits nuclear sites
New Tab ↗
|
On Sunday, the global community awaited Iran's reaction to significant U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, an action that, along with Israel's ongoing military engagement, marks the largest Western military intervention against Iran since its 1979 revolution.
The U.S. targeted Iran's Fordow nuclear facility with 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs. Following these attacks, American leaders urged de-escalation, while anti-war protests emerged in U.S. cities. President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social, suggested the possibility of regime change in Iran, stating, "if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn’t there be a Regime change???"
Meanwhile, Iran and Israel continued exchanging missile attacks. Israel confirmed hitting military targets in western Iran after Iranian missiles injured many and destroyed buildings in Tel Aviv.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a "heightened threat environment" alert in the U.S., warning of potential cyberattacks and targeted violence, leading to increased law enforcement patrols around religious, cultural, and diplomatic sites in major cities. The U.S. State Department also advised American citizens abroad to exercise extreme caution due to possible anti-American demonstrations and airspace closures across the Middle East.
Although Iran has not yet directly retaliated against the U.S. by targeting bases or disrupting oil supplies, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated in Istanbul that all responses were being considered and that diplomacy would not resume until retaliation occurred. He criticized the U.S. for its disregard for international law, stating, "They only understand the language of threat and force."
President Trump lauded the strikes as a "spectacular military success," claiming Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities were "completely and totally obliterated." Commercial satellite imagery suggests severe damage to the deeply buried Fordow plant, though its exact status remains unconfirmed. The International Atomic Energy Agency reported no increased off-site radiation levels but could not yet assess underground damage. A senior Iranian source, however, claimed most highly enriched uranium at Fordow was relocated before the attack, a claim Reuters could not immediately verify.
Trump urged Iran to forgo retaliation, stating that it "must now make peace" or face "far greater and a lot easier" future attacks. In a move seen as Iran's most significant threat to Western interests, its parliament approved closing the Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly a quarter of global oil shipments pass. This action would require approval from Iran's Supreme National Security Council and could drastically increase global oil prices, potentially inviting conflict with the U.S. Navy's Fifth Fleet, which is tasked with keeping the strait open. Following the attacks, Brent crude and U.S. crude futures rose to their highest levels since January.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated no further military operations were planned against Iran unless they provoked. The U.N. Security Council met to discuss the U.S. strikes, with Russia, China, and Pakistan proposing a ceasefire resolution. U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres described the U.S. bombings as a dangerous escalation and called for a halt to fighting and a return to nuclear program negotiations.
Despite U.S. officials stressing that their mission was not about regime change, Israeli officials, who initiated hostilities with a surprise attack on June 13, have increasingly expressed their goal of toppling Iran's ruling clerical establishment. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel was close to eliminating the threats posed by Iran's ballistic missiles and nuclear program.

New Zealand's 'golden visa' scheme lures US investors
New Tab ↗
|
New Zealand announced on Monday that its newly revised foreign investor migrant visa has attracted a surge in applications, as the center-right government seeks to draw more wealthy individuals to help boost the country's economy.
In April, the government made significant changes to the visa rules, including reducing the minimum investment required for higher-risk categories from NZ$15 million (approximately US$9 million) to NZ$5 million (about US$3 million). It also removed the English language requirement for applicants.
Immigration Minister Erica Stanford described the response as “a flood of formal interest” in the revamped "golden visa" program. She noted that the new applications could bring up to NZ$845 million in fresh investment into New Zealand businesses.
According to Stanford, in less than three months, the government received 189 applications for the Active Investor Plus visa — a notable increase compared to the 116 applications submitted under the old rules over a span of two and a half years.
Among the applicants, U.S. citizens made up the largest group, submitting 85 applications. They were followed by individuals from mainland China (26 applications) and Hong Kong (24 applications).
The surge in interest comes as New Zealand’s economy showed stronger-than-expected growth in the first quarter, according to recent official figures. This improvement offers some optimism after the country experienced a technical recession last year — its worst economic performance, aside from the pandemic, since 1991.

Beijing issues weather warning for hottest days of year
New Tab ↗
|
Residents in Beijing sought shade and relief on Monday as the Chinese capital sweltered under one of the hottest days of the year so far. The city’s meteorological bureau issued an orange-level heat warning—the second-highest on China’s three-tier heat alert system—as temperatures soared close to 38 degrees Celsius (100°F).
The warning prompted city officials to urge the public to minimize outdoor activities, drink plenty of fluids, and be vigilant about symptoms of heatstroke. With a population of over 22 million, Beijing was placed on alert amid ongoing heatwaves that have increasingly gripped northern China in recent years. In contrast, some southern parts of the country are contending with heavy rains and flooding, highlighting the growing climate imbalance across regions.
Li Weijun, a 22-year-old intern, said the unrelenting heat had disrupted his daily routine. “It’s been very hot lately, especially the last few days,” he told AFP. He has stopped wearing formal clothing to work and now delays his evening exercise until after 10 p.m. to avoid the worst of the heat. “I think this is related to climate change, and maybe also to how nature has been damaged,” he added.
Protective Measures and Public Response
Guidelines issued by city authorities advised that construction workers limit their hours under the sun, and urged the elderly or individuals with health conditions to avoid strenuous activity. On the streets, residents took visible measures to shield themselves from the sun.
Zhang Chen, 28, who works in IT, told reporters she always carried an umbrella for sun protection. “I used to cycle, but once it gets this hot, I stop,” she said.
While many avoided the sun, delivery drivers continued working, zipping through the downtown area at midday to keep Beijing’s workforce fed and caffeinated. Some sought brief respite by parking their scooters in shady spots, while others cooled down with ice cream or waded into city canals for relief.
Rising Temperatures and Climate Implications
Although Monday’s temperatures didn’t surpass Beijing’s record-high June reading of 41.1°C set in 2023, the persistent heat has reignited concerns about global climate change. Human activities, particularly the burning of fossil fuels, have accelerated the release of greenhouse gases, leading to longer, more intense heatwaves worldwide.
As the world’s largest emitter of carbon dioxide, China plays a pivotal role in global climate discussions. The country has pledged to peak its emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. In recent years, it has also taken major strides in expanding renewable energy infrastructure, as part of efforts to reduce its reliance on coal.
Coping with the Heat – A Local Perspective
For many longtime residents of the capital, such scorching summers are nothing new, but attitudes are shifting. “I was born and raised in Beijing, and summer has always been like this,” said 42-year-old Lucy Lu, who spent her lunch break playing jianzi, a traditional Chinese game, with friends in a shaded area.
Still, she expressed concern over working conditions in extreme heat. “I do think when the temperature goes over 40 degrees, people should be allowed to work from home or have some time off to reduce the risk of heatstroke,” she suggested.
As the mercury continues to rise in major cities like Beijing, climate resilience and public safety are becoming increasingly urgent topics—both for local policymakers and global leaders.
