In a significant hardening of its diplomatic stance, the Thai government has officially demanded that Cambodia take the first step in declaring a ceasefire to end a week of devastating border violence. During a press briefing in Bangkok, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maratee Nalita Andamo asserted that as the "aggressor" in the conflict, it is Cambodia's responsibility to initiate a truce. Beyond a halt in fire, Thailand has set a secondary condition for peace: the "sincere" and transparent cooperation from Phnom Penh in de-mining the disputed border zones.

The human cost of this reignited territorial dispute has been immense. Since hostilities flared on December 7, the death toll has reached at least 52 people across both nations, with casualties including soldiers and a growing number of civilians. The violence has triggered a massive humanitarian crisis, displacing an estimated 800,000 residents as combat spreads across seven border provinces. In Cambodia alone, at least 17 civilians have been confirmed dead, while thousands of Thai nationals remain stranded in border towns like Poipet following abrupt land border closures.

Escalation and Failed Mediations
The conflict has evolved into one of the most intense military confrontations in recent history for the two neighbors, involving heavy artillery, tanks, and Thai F-16 fighter jets. Cambodian officials have accused the Thai military of striking "deep into" their territory, specifically targeting Banteay Meanchey and even bombing Siem Reap Province—home to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Angkor Wat—for the first time during this round of clashes.

This surge in fighting has directly contradicted recent claims of peace from Washington. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had successfully brokered a ceasefire between Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Premier Hun Manet. However, Bangkok has since explicitly denied the existence of any such agreement, maintaining that military operations will continue until their specific security conditions are met.

The Path to Emergency Diplomacy
The root of the violence remains the unresolved, colonial-era demarcation of the 800-kilometer shared border, which contains several ancient temple ruins claimed by both sides. While a temporary truce was successfully mediated in July by the U.S., China, and Malaysia, it collapsed in November after Thai soldiers were severely wounded by landmines—an incident Bangkok blames on newly laid Cambodian explosives.

In a renewed push for a diplomatic exit, the following international efforts are underway:

ASEAN Emergency Talks: Foreign ministers are scheduled to convene for an emergency meeting in Malaysia on December 22 to seek a regional solution.

China’s Mediation: Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has recently ramped up "shuttle diplomacy," holding high-level calls with both nations to urge a de-escalation that protects regional stability.

Observer Teams: Malaysia has proposed deploying an ASEAN observer team to the border to verify which side is initiating fire.
