Hơn 100 tờ báo trên khắp nước Mỹ sẽ đồng loạt công kích "cuộc chiến bẩn thỉu" của ông Trump khi ông liên tục công kích vào báo giới.

Chiến dịch kể trên được tờ Boston Globe đứng đầu. Tờ báo này đã kểu gọi các tòa soạn trên khắp nước Mỹ, đề nghị họ cùng đăng tải xã luận lên án sự thù địch của tổng thống đối với giới truyền thông.

"Cuộc chiến bẩn thỉu nhằm vào báo chí tự do phải chấm dứt", Guardian trích lời đề nghị từ Boston Globe.

"Các cơ quan báo chí, bất chấp quan điểm chính trị gì, đều có thể đưa ra tuyên bố mạnh mẽ bằng việc sát cánh cùng nhau trong cuộc chiến bảo vệ nghề nghiệp của họ và vai trò thiết yếu nó nắm giữ trong chính quyền và đối với người dân".

Marjorie Pritchard, phó thư ký phụ trách trang xã luận của Boston Globe, cho biết tính đến ngày 11/8, hơn 100 tờ báo đã đăng ký tham dự chiến dịch. Trong số này có những nhật báo phát hành tại các thành phố lớn như Houston Chronicle, Miami Herald, Denver Post cho đến các tuần san nhỏ.

Mỗi tờ báo sẽ xuất bản bài viết riêng của họ vào ngày 16/8. Chiến dịch này cũng được Hiệp hội Biên tập Tin tức Mỹ ủng hộ.

"Chúng tôi đề xuất xuất bản một bài xã luận vào ngày 16/8 về những mối nguy hiểm của các cuộc tấn công từ chính quyền đối với báo chí và yêu cầu các báo khác cam kết sẽ đăng tải bài viết của riêng họ vào ngày đó", theo lời đề nghị.

"Câu chữ của chúng tôi khác nhau. Nhưng ít nhất chúng tôi có thể đồng ý rằng những cuộc tấn công như vậy là đáng báo động".

Tổng thống Trump thừa công kích những báo đài hoặc các phóng viên làm ra các bản tin ông không thích và gọi họ là "tin giả". Ông còn gọi báo chí là "kẻ thù của người dân".

"Chúng tôi không phải kẻ thù của nhân dân", AP dẫn lời ông Pritchard.

Guardian miêu tả căng thẳng giữa tổng thống và báo giới thường bộc lộ rất rõ trong các buổi gặp gỡ người ủng hộ của Trump. Người ủng hộ tổng thống thường giễu cợt, dùng từ ngữ thô lỗ và thậm chí quấy rối các phóng viên làm việc cho những tờ báo chỉ trích tổng thống, và đôi khi thái độ này nhận được sự hậu thuẫn của tổng thống.
