Default Vietnamese teen secures $300K Johns Hopkins scholarship after shifting focus from math to English

Nguyen Duc Bao Khoi, a 12th grader from Ho Chi Minh City's High School for the Gifted, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing an 80% scholarship worth USD 307,000 to study neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University. This prestigious university, ranked sixth in the U.S. and first in Biomedical Sciences by U.S. News & World Report, has an acceptance rate of just 7%. For Khoi and his family, this life-changing opportunity brought immense joy and relief when they received the news in late December.

Khoi recalled the moment vividly: "I was half-asleep when I opened the email. Then I saw the congratulations and the 80% scholarship. I couldn't believe it. My mom kept asking if it was real, and then my whole family cheered." The scholarship significantly reduces the burden of attending Johns Hopkins, where annual tuition and living expenses total approximately USD 90,000.

A Journey Rooted in Passion for Medicine
Khoi’s success stems from his unwavering dedication and a cohesive application that highlighted his academic achievements, research experiences, extracurricular activities, and personal essays. Since childhood, he has aspired to pursue medicine, inspired initially by the challenge it presents and later by its noble purpose. In middle school, he excelled in Math, Chemistry, and Biology, affirming his career aspirations.

In high school, Khoi made a pivotal decision to transition from Math to an English specialization class at the High School for the Gifted, part of Vietnam National University, HCMC. He believed mastering English was essential for studying abroad and adapting to life overseas. This decision set the stage for his future success.

Academic Excellence and Rigorous Preparation
Khoi’s academic journey is a testament to his discipline and perseverance. In 10th grade, he self-studied the 11th-grade curriculum, completing his high school knowledge ahead of schedule. Balancing his schoolwork with SAT preparation, AP courses, and extracurricular activities, Khoi achieved outstanding results, including a GPA of 9.8, an IELTS score of 8.5, a 1560/1600 SAT score, and top AP scores in Math and Chemistry.

Khoi also gained valuable research experience, which strengthened his university application. In 10th grade, he worked in neuroscience labs at Vietnam National University and later joined a research team at the Stem Cell Institute. During the summer of 11th grade, he conducted a project at the Institute of Applied Materials Science, exploring the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties of fishtail palm (Caryota mitis).

Despite facing numerous challenges, such as unfamiliar equipment and long commutes to the lab, Khoi persevered. He often worked from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., followed by tutoring classes in the evening. Reflecting on this period, Khoi said, "When I felt like giving up, I reminded myself to push a little further. I didn't want to regret not giving my all."

A Personal Essay with Heart
Khoi’s personal essay played a crucial role in his application. Initially prepared months in advance, he decided to rewrite it just five days before the submission deadline under the guidance of his teachers. The essay begins with an evocative image of his mother’s fingerprint, symbolizing her identity and contributions to society despite her peeling skin rendering the fingerprint almost unusable. Inspired by his mother’s sacrifices and his volunteer experience at a Mekong Delta orphanage, Khoi reflected on the importance of silent, selfless acts of kindness.

Khoi’s essay demonstrated his depth of thought and personal growth, leaving a lasting impression on the admissions committee.

Recognition and Future Plans
Tran Nam Dung, Deputy Principal of the High School for the Gifted, praised Khoi’s determination and intellectual curiosity. "Khoi’s commitment to improvement and excellence is remarkable," he said.

While Khoi is almost certain to join Johns Hopkins in the fall of 2025, he remains focused on his immediate goals. He is preparing for Vietnam’s national high school graduation exams and applying to Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University as a backup plan.

Khoi’s journey serves as an inspiring example of perseverance, ambition, and the pursuit of excellence, marking a bright future for this exceptional Vietnamese student.
