New Zealand to tighten immigration rules amid crime concerns

The New Zealand government is set to introduce a new legislative bill this Wednesday aimed at significantly tightening the country’s immigration, asylum, and deportation frameworks. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stated that these changes are designed to provide "proportionate tools" to combat migrant exploitation, serious criminal offending by non-citizens, and "bad-faith" asylum claims that undermine the integrity of the system.

One of the most substantial shifts in the proposed law involves the window for deportation. Currently, residents are liable for deportation for serious crimes committed within 10 years of arrival; the new bill seeks to double that period to 20 years. Additionally, the maximum penalty for exploiting migrant workers would increase from seven to 10 years in prison, signaling a harsher stance against employers who abuse the system.

The legislation also grants authorities broader powers to act when false or misleading information is discovered during the immigration process. This push reflects a global trend where governments are facing increasing political pressure to deport non-citizens convicted of violent or organized crimes while attempting to preserve public support for legitimate refugee protections.

In a related move, the government is tabling a parliamentary paper to overhaul asylum protocols. A key proposal would allow immigration officials to consider serious crimes committed by a claimant within New Zealand before a final decision is made on their refugee status. According to Minister Stanford, 14 known refugee claimants have previously been convicted of high-level offenses in New Zealand, including murder, arson, and serious sexual crimes.

Finally, the bill targets individuals deemed to be acting in bad faith. This includes those who intentionally seek media publicity to bolster their asylum claims or those who repeatedly skip mandatory biometric appointments without a valid reason. Because the current government holds a majority in parliament, the bill is expected to pass through its three required readings and become law.
