Ở các tiểu bang ở phía Nam nước Mỹ, như Texas, việc chạm trán với heo rừng sau sân nhà là điều rất thường xảy ra. Các con heo rừng, hung dữ và ăn tạp, nặng tới 200 pounds (hơn 90kg) hay hơn nữa, chạy rông trên đường phố, ủi vào xe, đào mồ trong nghĩa địa, là điều đang được nói tới hàng ngày ở các khu vực này.

Nhưng cuộc chiến với heo rừng nay đã lan tới khu vực Bắc nước Mỹ. Ở Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon và Pennsylvania, những tiểu bang mà chỉ không lâu trước đây không hề nghe nói tới heo rừng, các giới chức trách nhiệm đang phải vội vã lo đối phó với cuộc xâm lăng của lòai thú hoang này vì chúng đào xới mọi nơi, phá các thảm cỏ trước nhà, tiêu diệt các khu vực đầm lầy, giết hại gia súc, truyền đủ lại bệnh và cũng thường tấn công loài người.

Năm 1990, chỉ có chưa đầy 2 triệu con heo rừng sống ở 20 tiểu bang, theo Tíên Sĩ John J. Mayer, người đứng đầu phòng thí nghiệm môi trường ở Savannah River National Laboratory, tại thành phố Aiken, tiểu bang South Carolina. Con số này nay tăng lên thành 6 triệu, nhìn thấy xuất hiện ở 47 tiểu bang và coi như đã lập hẳn vùng sinh sống ở 38 tiểu bang—tạo nên sự “bùng nổ heo rừng” trên nước Mỹ.

Các con heo rừng này lúc đầu chỉ là thành phần thoát ra từ các nơi nuôi chúng để dùng cho việc săn bắn hay trong khi được vận chuyển trái phép qua các tiểu bang.

Các chuyên gia về heo rừng ước tính mỗi năm chúng gây thiệt hại hơn $1.5 tỉ, chỉ trong lãnh vực nông nghiệp, lên đến khoảng $300 cho mỗi con heo rừng—vào năm 2007. Bộ Nông Nghiệp Mỹ quan tâm đến vấn đề này đến nỗi phải dành ra $20 triệu để tìm cách giải quyết nhưng cũng không đi đến đâu. (V.Giang)
