Train collision kills 14, injures dozens near Jakarta

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has ordered an immediate investigation into a fatal train collision that left 14 people dead and dozens injured near the Bekasi Timur station, east of Jakarta.

The incident occurred late Monday night when a long-distance train collided with a stationary commuter train. According to state-owned rail operator KAI, the commuter train had come to a halt on the tracks after being clipped by a taxi at a level crossing. The subsequent impact, which struck the commuter train’s final, women-only carriage, triggered a complex 12-hour rescue operation.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts
Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), confirmed on Tuesday morning that recovery efforts had concluded and no further victims remained in the wreckage.

Fatalities: 14 confirmed dead.

Injuries: 84 people required medical treatment.

Evacuation: All approximately 240 passengers aboard the long-distance train were evacuated safely.

Survivors described harrowing scenes as the stationary carriage was struck. Sausan Sarifah, a 29-year-old survivor hospitalized with a broken arm and lacerations, recalled the speed of the impact. "There was no time to get out," she said. "Everyone ended up piled up inside the train, crushed on top of one another."

Presidential Directive
President Prabowo visited survivors at the RSUD Bekasi hospital on Tuesday to offer condolences to the families of the deceased. Addressing the broader issue of rail safety, the President pointed to the lack of guarded level crossings as a critical systemic vulnerability.

He has mandated a swift investigation and ordered the urgent construction of overpasses and the improvement of guard posts at crossings across the region to prevent future tragedies.

Context on Infrastructure Safety
Transportation accidents remain a persistent challenge in Indonesia, where aging infrastructure and maintenance issues often plague public transit systems. This collision is the most significant rail incident in the country since January 2024, when a crash in West Java left four crew members dead and dozens injured. KAI has committed to covering all medical and funeral expenses for those affected by Monday’s crash.
