Chinese livestream sellers turn South Korean streets into online shops for ‘authentic’ goods

Chinese livestream vendors are transforming the streets of Seoul into high-energy digital storefronts, using the city's iconic shopping districts as a backdrop to sell fashion products directly to consumers in China. This emerging trend, particularly visible in districts like Myeong-dong and Hongdae, involves sellers broadcasting in the early hours of the morning to capitalize on the perceived authenticity of sourcing goods directly from South Korea.

The primary driver behind this strategy is "proof of origin." By filming in front of recognizable South Korean landmarks and storefronts, vendors convince their audience on platforms like Douyin that the products—ranging from sports jackets to outdoor gear—are genuine. This visual verification is crucial for Chinese consumers who are wary of counterfeit goods and are often willing to pay a premium for "authentic" Korean quality, even if the prices offered by these street vendors are significantly lower than those in Chinese malls.

The scale of these operations has expanded rapidly, with local merchants in Myeong-dong reporting a three- to fourfold increase in these broadcasts over the last six months. The business model typically involves a host demonstrating the products while an assistant manages high-speed orders on a laptop. Once the live session ends, the footage is often edited into short, viral clips to reach a wider audience, further driving sales through competitive pricing that can be up to 20% cheaper than traditional online retail.

Consumer behavior experts suggest that this "vicarious experience" is part of the appeal. Professor Lee Eun-hee from Inha University notes that broadcasting on busy streets allows viewers to feel the local atmosphere of Seoul, making the shopping experience more immersive and trustworthy. For younger vendors, the focus has shifted toward "cost-effective" items and personal curation, where they personally test and wear the items to describe the fit and feel to their followers.

However, the rise of street livestreaming has created friction with local South Korean business owners. Many shopkeepers have expressed frustration over noise levels and the physical blockage of pedestrian walkways, which can deter traditional foot traffic. Despite these growing pains, there have been few formal restrictions or crackdowns, allowing the "street-to-smartphone" economy to continue its rapid growth in Seoul’s commercial hubs.
