Một phán quyết của tòa trọng tài về tranh chấp Biển Đông đã gây tức giận cho Đài Loan. Để phản ứng lại, nước này đang chuẩn bị điều một tàu chiến vào vùng biển tranh chấp.

Tổng thống Thái Anh Văn hôm nay đã lên nói chuyện tại chiến hạm này trước khi nó rời cảng Cao Hùng.Tòa án trọng tài Hague ngày hôm qua đưa ra các phán quyết chống lại đòi hỏi chủ quyền của Trung Quốc đối với hầu như toàn bộ biển Đông. Phán quyết cũng nói rằng Itu Aba, tức là Ba Bình nằm trong tay của Đài Loan, là một rặng san hô chứ không phải là một hòn đảo. Và vì vậy, Đài Bắc không có quyền với vùng đặc quyền kinh tế xung quanh rặng Ba Bình.

Trên chiến hạm, Bà Thái Anh Văn nói là phán quyết của Tòa Trọng tài đã ảnh hưởng nghiêm trọng đến quyền lợi của Đài Loan trong vùng Biển Đông, và vì vậy, Đài Bắc điều tàu chiến đến Ba Bình để chứng minh quyết tâm của người dân Đài Loan bảo vệ các lợi ích của nước này. Ngày hôm qua, Đài Loan cũng đã ra tuyên bố bác bỏ phán quyết của Tòa trọng tài.

Totally wrong ... China is doing what other powers have historically done!

1) No permanent member of the U.N. Security Council has ever complied with a ruling by the PCA on an issue involving the Law of the Sea! To this date, none of the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council have ever accepted any international court's ruling when (in their view) it infringed on their sovereignty or national security interests.

2) In 1980's, Nicaragua sued the US for mining its harbors. Same reaction as China, the United States argued that the International Court of Justice,the principal judicial arm of the United Nations, did not have the authority to hear Nicaragua's case. When the court rejected that claim, the United States not only refused to participate in subsequent proceedings, but also denied the court's jurisdiction on any future case involving the United States, unless Washington explicitly made an exception and asked the court to hear a case.

... A) UNCLOS III, there had been UNCLOS I-II since 1958, did not became effective 'til 1994. The US has never ratified UNCLOS III!

3) 2003 Invasion of Iraq was predicated upon western allies and primarily US officials statements and presentations to the UN about Iraq ties with al-Qaeda and terrorist networks, and specifically about weapons of mass destruction. All of which were false and the "coalition of the willing" as Bush called it were severely coerced into accepting the US agenda.

... A) As stated by the UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan ... "From our point of view and the UN Charter point of view, it [the war] was illegal."

... B) Under Article 39 of the UN Charter, the UN Security Council has the ability to rule on the legality of the war. No member nation has asked for such a ruling b/c both the US & England are permanent members of the Security council which have veto powers.

Thus, powerful nations do not recognize the jurisdiction of these courts ... except in particular cases where they believe it is in their interest to do so! As Thucydides' Melian mantra eloquently stated "the strong do as they will; the weak suffer as they must"
